Learning something new

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it here before or not, but the past several weeks I have been re-learning how to sew.

I learned the basics in high school, but didn't stay with it much beyond my home-ec class and the bermuda shorts and alphabet pillows we made there.

But all of a sudden this fall I started thinking of things I wanted to sew!
So... (haha) I borrowed my mom's machine and called her 47 times a project.

And then.... Greg surprised me with a machine of my own for Christmas!

And all this leads me to.....

....the project I finished today.

A friend of ours is expecting a baby in March. Recently, almost apologizing for the silly apron she was wearing, she commented that her 'pretty' one didn't fit over her belly anymore.

So... (haha again)...

under the fine tutelage of my sewing instructor/mom, I made this:

(The ties in the back are the same white background/blue polka dots as the pockets and neck tie.)

I just think it is the cutest thing I've ever seen. Even if I did make it myself!

Do you sew? What things do you like to make?

  1. Yes, I do sew and I love it. However, I never had home ec class. I had to teach myself by using a pattern, a book and instructions from my mom. The first thing I ever sewed was a baby dress for my niece 24 years ago. Every thing was perfect and fit well except the neck hole...couldn't get her head through it! Mom adjusted my first project and my niece wore it until she outgrew it. We still have it for posterity.

  2. I forgot to say that your apron turned out beautifully! I most like to sew home improvement projects like duvet covers, bed skirts, curtains and drapes.

  3. I hate to sew but love this! It reminds me of my grandmother. We called her Nonie and she was always making aprons. Thanks for the memory!

  4. Congratulations! Your finished apron looks great - what a nice gift it will make! I own a machine but so wish I knew how to sew (why I own a machine...um????) Keep working hard - it is a wonderful skill.

  5. I like to sew, but am always in the learning process. I made all of Micah's nursery bedding and am now working on his big boy bed stuff. I am also in the process of making new curtains for our house. It takes me forever to get in the mood these days, so these projects may linger a while. :)
I have really enjoyed making taggies blankets, burp cloths and hooded towels when Micah was tiny. Guess it will time for those again soon. :)

  6. Amy, do you know what I would have given for one of these during my baby having days?! God bless you for using your creativity to help out your friend!
By the way, other than for watching my mama sew when I was very young, guess who gave me my first (and only!!) sewing lesson? :)

  7. The apron is great! I, too, sewed some while younger and now try to do simple things on my own. I seem to make things way more difficult than they are!! Now if I could just get my mom up here we could work on a number of projects I have tucked away:)
Oh, I nominated you for an award on Monday:)

  8. I didnt sew till Maggie came. I guess having a girl opened up the idea of dresses. I did make Parker a cape for Christmas. He is very much into super heroes. Learning to sew is easier these days. I got a lot of instruction from YouTube! Now thanks to patterns being 99 cents every so often at Hobby Lobby I have more projects than time. One day I would like a place besides the kitchen table so I can make the mess and leave it!
